White Linen Night returns
For those of who missed the event last year, it was easily one of the highlights of the summer. Artists, food and special sales all over the neighborhood marked the event, styled on a similar summer happening held in New Orleans every year. The event will cover the entire Heights area, focusing on art, galleries, retail, outdoor markets, live music, fashion, restaurants and bars featuring entertainment, shopping, great food and cool summer drinks.
My main memories from last year were:
Easily tops were the monitors at What!, the furniture place at 603 West 19th. On a hot, steamy evening, my wife and two friends were about to head straight to a restaurant for some food and AC when in came a tray of monitors. It was the first one I'd ever had and remains to this day the best. It was the perfect antidote to the climate. It was also quickly followed by a platter of food from Vietnam next door. Man, were we in heaven.
The crowds along West 19th. Every place was packed with people. It was like nothing else I had ever seen along the street.
The all-white Mitch Cohen at Yale St. Arts Market. Cohen was dressed head-to-toe in white linen, topped with dyed BRIGHT white hair. I double-dog dare him to do it again.
My first time in Wind Water Gallery, 548 West 19th. Though definitely not my last. If you've never seen the large collection of Asian art and antiques in here, you should. And White Linen Night is as good a time to start as any.
And on the Asian art theme, my wife and I took our visiting friends from Austin to Tansy, 321B West 19th, that evening. (Or as my friend called it "That origami-explosion place.") Everything was just beautiful in there, as it always is.
It is fair to say that it will be impossible to hit all 116 shops, sites and restaurants participating in this year's White Linen Night, but Saturday evening, we're going to give it a good go.
Or better, yet, head out into the neighborhood Saturday evening with no plan at all. Just flap where the breeze takes you. As Cohen said to me last year, the whole point of White Linen Night is to have fun, see things you don't normally see and do things you don't normally do. With a list of places and events this long, you really can't miss.

Billed by organizers as sultry, steamy, exotic and artfully provocative, White Linen Night 2007 is heating up to be much bigger than its 2006 little sister. The Whole Heights event will focus on art, galleries, retail, outdoor markets, live music, fashion, restaurants and bars featuring entertainment, shopping, great food and cool summer drinks. The eclectic nature of the neighborhood will be evident as the Victorian and Bungalow homes become the backdrop for the modern crowds and hot fine art gallery scene - an area promising "small town cool in the center of the big city." Visitors are encouraged to wear cool white linen and take to the Heights streets.
The Heights is a magnet for the quirky and offbeat, attracting businesses you won't find anywhere else. You will find fine restaurants near funky neighborhood bars, cafes and beer joints. There are gourmet food markets, hand-made and one-of-a-kind gift shops, galleries filled with fine art, folk, outsider, self-taught art - affordable art. And an outdoor Arts Market - featuring all original art, live Latino Rock, Blues, and odd finds like gourmet olive oil and cards made by a 9-year-old boy with a mission to save the world. Bike shops and scooter shops and hand-rolled cigar shops are just steps away from a fine craft gallery, a landmark ice house and a busy neighborhood people-watching bar/caf.
Many "best-of" establishments call the Heights home, including the best new Houston restaurant of 2007, the best late-night restaurant, the best chicken-fried steak in Houston, the best tacos, the best plants, the best homemade ranch dressing, and even the best value. Shops carrying retro, trendy, bling, high fashion, fine leather goods, hand-made jewelry, and showy studded accessories line the old main street of the Heights. You'll also find some of the most varied and widely-gathered imports for the home in this small neighborhood. Art furniture made from reclaimed wood and materials can be found, too. You can take something home for $5 or $5,000. Antiques and home furnishings, the original draw to the Heights, are still in abundance up, down and across the neighborhood.
Heights Boulevard, lined with some of the original 1880's Victorian homes, 19th Street, Yale, White Oak, Studewood, North Main, and 11th Street are all represented well on White Linen Night, as well as some other off-the-beaten-path neighbors.
"Hot southern nights just beg for this kind of thing," said one of the organizers. The event, billed as a celebration of art, culture, and community, will offer signature White Linen Bacardi drinks and recipes, entertainment, art galleries, boutiques and shops, some of the best restaurants in Houston, and funky bars - with pedi-cabs and shuttles for free transportation.
Action Limousine, who provides the shuttles, is also a sponsor offering limos to hire for the event. Yellow Cab is a sponsor that will offer special rates for the evening. Organizers suggest visitors bring their own limos and friends for a chance to experience the New Orleans tradition Houston Heights, Texas style.
